Norton AntiVirus Warning |
||||||||||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
It has come to our attention that some of our Windows customers may encounter an issue on computers protected by Norton Internet Security, particularly 2010. Attempting to start an installation causes Norton Internet Security to announce that the virus WS.Reputation.1* has been detected, and then quarantine the program. |
||||||||||||||
This is a known mistake by the Norton Internet Security product and is being investigated by Symantec. Our products are safe - there are no viruses in our downloads. To verify, concerned users may wish to scan the program with other antivirus software, or use an online service such as Virustotal.com to confirm. If you have been affected by this issue, you can un-quarantine the download using the Norton Internet Security application. Further information is available from the Norton community site. Symantec claims to have resolved this issue. If you still encounter this problem and are running Norton Internet Security, please run Live Update (a part of the Norton tools) to ensure your virus definitions are current. |

| * | WS.Reputation.1 is literally a "reputation" evaluation by Symantec's internal rating system versus any actual detection of a virus, a trojan horse or any other legitimate threat. An unknown reputation results in an incorrect alert of a virus. From Symantec: The reputation-based system uses "the wisdom of crowds" (Symantec's tens of millions of end users) connected to cloud-based intelligence to compute a reputation score for an application, and in the process identify malicious software in an entirely new way beyond traditional signatures and behavior-based detection techniques. Because this detection is based on a reputation score created by tens of millions of computers, and it ignores all computers running any other antivirus software or even other versions of Norton, it has a built in discrimination against companies distributing thousands versus millions of copies. |
